Battle Invited to World University Games

Nittany Lion point-guard Talor Battle (Albany, N.Y.) has accepted an invitation to join 15 of the nation’s top collegiate players at the 2009 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games Team training camp to be held June 16-24 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Battle, a rising junior who was a first-team All-Big Ten, USBWA and NABC All-District selection last season, will look to become part of the 12-member USA Team that will compete at the World University Games July 2-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan has been selected by USA Basketball to serve as head coach of the 2009 USA Men’s World University Games Team. Ryan’s two assistant coaches are to be announced.

The rest of the 15 invited players are listed below:

  • Evan Turner – Ohio State
  • JuJuan Johnson – Purdue
  • Robbie Hummel – Purdue
  • Mike Davis – Illinois
  • Deon Thompson – North Carolina
  • Jarvis Vernado – Mississippi State
  • Sherron Collins – Kansas
  • Corey Fisher – Villanova
  • James Anderson – Oklahoma State
  • Trevor Booker – Clemson
  • Da’Sean Butler – West Virginia
  • Lazar Hayward – Marquette
  • Craig Brackins – Iowa State
  • Quincy Pondexter – Washington

Congrats to Talor for the awesome opportunity. 12 players make the team after the training camp that will be held June 16th-24th at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado.  If he makes the team, he’ll travel with the team to Belgrade, Serbia for the World University Games tournament from July 2nd-12th.

Looking over that roster, I feel good about Battle’s chances of making the team. There’s an awful lot of versatility on that roster among the 2’s/3’s and the 4’s/5’s.  If Bo only wants to keep two ball handlers, he would keep two out of Collins/Fisher/Battle. I personally would keep three with that roster, but that’s just me. I’m also curious if Kalin Lucas got an invite and rejected it, or if Battle was chosen first. Here’s how that roster breaks down…

C – Johnson, Vernado, Booker

PF – Thompson, Brackins, Davis

SF – Hummel, Hayward, Pondexter

SG – Turner, Butler, Anderson

PG – Collins, Battle, Fisher

Also, I’ve been trying to start Brooks’ report card and find myself at loss for what to put under ‘Good’…haha, we’ll see what happens.
